Intrauterine Device-IUD- Contaception

• IUD or intrauterine device.
• Two types:
o Copper T
o LNG-IUS
• Safe.
• Provide long-term contraception.
• Inserted by a doctor.
• Effective in preventing pregnancy: less than one percent failure rate in the first year.
• Copper T device contains small amounts of copper: stop the passage of sperm into the fallopian tubes.
• Effective for up to ten years.
• Prevents ectopic pregnancies.
• Protective against endometrial cancer.
• Disadvantages:
o Spotting or cramping after insertion.
o Does not prevent STDs.
o Women are allergic to copper: Cannot use it.
• LNG-IUS device contains levonorgestrel: type of progestin: gives off a small amount of progesterone causes
a thickening of the cervical mucus.
• Efficacy rate of 99.9 percent per year.
• Prevents menstrual cramping,
• Reduces the amount of menstrual bleeding.
• In place for seven years.
• Disadvantages:
o Increases the number days menstruating for the first few months but then decreases after about six months of use.
o Costly to insert.
